What is an EICR ?

An EICR also known as a Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) or Periodic Inspection is a report on the condition of an existing electrical installation to identify (in order of priority) any deterioration and wear and tear against the national safety standards for electrical installation. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 states that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury or harm must be maintained and kept in a safe condition.

Understanding the EICR Process: What to Expect

During a periodic inspection in or around Sheffield, our qualified electrician will assess the safety and performance of your electrical installation as part of our comprehensive EICR testing Sheffield services. The inspection consists of three main parts:

  • Visual assessment: Our electricians will check for any damaged cables, sockets, switches, and other components of your wiring system.
  • Dead testing: We will disconnect the electrical installation from the mains supply and perform tests to identify any issues with poor connections or cable damage that may not be visible during the visual assessment.
  • Live testing: This involves testing the RCDs (residual current devices) to ensure that they would disconnect the power within the specified time limit if a fault occurs in the future.

Additionally, we will inspect and test the earthing and bonding to ensure that the earth protection in your installation is sufficient and functioning properly.

What Certification will I receive after an EICR?

On completion of the testing you will receive an EICR certificate. This will be marked as either ‘Satisfactory’ or ‘Unsatisfactory,’ indicating whether remedial work is required.

Any issues or faults found during the EICR are highlighted on the report and categorised as follows:

  • FI – Further Investigation required to determine the issue
  • C1 – Immediate Danger to Life, immediate attention required
  • C2 – Potentially Dangerous – attention required
  • C3 – Improvement Recommended

If the report is marked as ‘Satisfactory; then there is nothing more to do until the renewal date. Should the report be marked as ‘Unsatisfactory’ then we will then supply you with a free no obligation fixed price remedial quotation for anything that we feel needs attention to bring your installation in line with the current regulations and for your peace of mind.

Once all the remedial work is complete we will provide you with a ‘Minor works’ certificate. A minor works certificate indicates that you have completed the required work. Your certificate is then valid for between 1-5 years depending on your business type. Read more about the frequency of testing with our guide to EICR
